CHAPTER 7

LOTTIE

“You know you could’ve brought Jesse,” Patty said. “Dates were invited to the rehearsal dinner.”

My fork played with my grilled salmon. I was hungry, but maybe I was too tired to eat. Just the thought of food was making my stomach do flips. Then again, it might be the internal battle I’d been dealing with since Jesse dropped me off at the B&B. Mrs. Clark was standing at the door as I did the walk of shame into the house. Thankfully, she didn’t ask where I’d been or made any snide comments. Those are about to come from Patty.

“I know, but he said he’d found the parts for Bruno and if I’m going to leave on Monday, he had to start working on it.” That was the truth, minus a few details, like I didn’t invite him. “I mean, that is why you sent him to tow Bruno. So he could fix it, right?” Felt good to turn this back onto Patty.

“Of course. Why else would we have called him? It is his job, and he's damn good at it.” There was no hint in her voice that she was trying to hide anything. Shocking. Guess I called that wrong. Another time and maybe she and I could have a good laugh at this situation. I wasn’t ready to laugh just yet. The thought of this weekend coming to an end so fast sucked. I had to kick myself in the ass for getting too attached to him. I knew that all we were going to have was a weekend together. Jesse took the time to ensure I wasn’t going to have any regrets about us becoming…intimate. For the most part, I didn’t. It was just that I hadn’t expected it to be as good as it was.

Gonna miss him.

“With those bags under your eyes, I’d have thought you two might have…you know…done a lot more than just sing and dance together last night,” she said, smirking.

I looked at the others sitting around the table to make sure no one was listening. Not that I cared. I lived in Chicago now. But my parents wouldn’t be thrilled for my name to be the center of gossip in town. Patty should understand that too.

Keeping my voice down, I asked, “Is this your way of asking if we had sex?” Patty nodded. “I’m a grown woman very capable of having a mature, casual, mutually satisfying relationship.”

“Hmm. That’s a lot of words when just yes would have sufficed.”

I huffed and she added, “I’m not going to lie. I’m worried about this. It’s like the two of you haven’t thought it all the way through.”

“What is there to think about? I asked him out. He said yes. We’re just…having fun for the weekend. I believe you suggested that I have more of that, didn’t you?” I reminded her.

“That’s when I thought you were bringing someone from Chicago, not…Jesse.”

I loved Patty, but this was getting…annoying. Time to put an end to it. “A good fuck is a good fuck no matter where the man is from.
